Inversion Again

Last week, Senator Tom Coburn (R, Okla) participated in defeating a bill championed by the Left that would have spent more money without any corresponding cuts in other spending or providing for a means to pay for it.

Senator and majority leader Harry Reid (D, Nev) stepped up ethics charges against Coburn. The charges against Coburn? Delivering babies for free!

In fact, Senator / Doctor Coburn pays his own malpractice insurance, and does the deliveries in a private hospital, not on taxpayer money. There is no possible illusion of conflict of interest, since the practice of free deliveries for uninsured parents does not produce either income or votes. As was pointed out in a radio interview with Sen / Dr Coburn, if the activity were performing abortions for free in a planned Parenthood abattoir, the conflict would be plain and yet not pursued by the Leftists.

In fact, Senators Leahy (D, Vt) and Reid both have had gigs that were more serious evasions of ethics. Nonetheless, Coburn is an enemy of the big spenders and will be forced to defend his generosity before the Senate Ethics Committee which is now functioning as a council of inquisitors.

The logical and ethical inversion shown in this case is indicative of the war on reason that is being waged in this country. Right now the war is waxing to side of irrational, social agenda agents who are determined to punish their foes.
