Gesture Liberalism?

The Washington Post allowed this (excerpted) article by George Will to be published:
"Gesture Liberalism
Today, Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged v. Sebelius may be the second-most serendipitously named court case in U.S. history, second to Loving v. Virginia (wherein Richard Loving, who was white, and his wife Mildred, who was black, in 1967 overturned Virginia’s law against interracial marriages). The Little Sisters are challenging the Obamacare mandate that makes them complicit in providing, through their health insurance, contraception, something that offends their faith.

This mandate illustrates Gesture Liberalism: It is unimportant to the structure of Obamacare. It has nothing to do with real insurance, which protects against unexpected developments — car insurance does not pay for oil changes. The mandate covers a minor expense: Target sells a month of birth control pills for $9 . The mandate is, however, a gesture affirming liberalism’s belief that any institution of civil society can be properly broken to the saddle of the state.

The next item on Gesture Liberalism’s agenda is to raise the minimum wage for the 23rd time. Less than 3 percent of the workforce earns the minimum; more than 60 percent of those who do earn it get a raise within a year; more than half of minimum-wage earners are students or other part-time workers from households with average incomes of $53,000. Never mind. Raising the minimum is a gesture of devotion to “equality.”

As is Obama’s support for universal preschool, the centerpiece of the agenda of New York City’s new mayor, Bill de Blasio. When, in Obama’s first inaugural address, he vowed to “restore science to its rightful place,” he evidently meant to exclude social science: There is much discouraging data about the efficacy of universal preschool.

It will, however, mean billions for hiring more members of teachers unions, whose dues will help elect the likes of Obama and de Blasio. So this component of Gesture Liberalism is more than just a gesture."
I'm less sanguine than Will, who is too generous. What Will interprets as mere gestures can also be discerned to be the foot-in-the-door, to be considered as legal precedent. When any Leftist law is challenged you can hear them scream "stare decisis", meaning that it is not the constitutionality nor the common sense nor even morality/fairness that should determine the judge's ruling on the issue; it is solely precedent, no matter how insignificant - if they have one that suits the purpose.

"Stare decisis" or "settled science" - whatever furthers the agenda. The logical contradictions are glaring, giving credence to the characterization of Atheo-Leftist "liberalism" as a "mental disorder." (But that diagnosis would only apply if they HAD minds; since they only have physical brains - NEVER MIND.)

I can understand the desire to "feel good" about "making a difference" in someone else's life, thereby granting ones self Messiah status.

What I don't get is the complete inability (and total lack of desire) to examine any historical data for possible negative consequences for the proposed policies. Instead, we get: "We have to pass the law to find out what's in it."

I don't know about you, but I grew up being warned not to buy "a pig in a poke". (For those of you reading this who might not have a farm background, you can't tell what kind of pig [or even if it IS a pig] in a closed sack.)

Pure evil perpetrated by these corrupt individuals, that's what it is. The HHS mandate was/is an intentional attack upon religious liberty, like Satan trying to force the Church to pay him homage. Make no mistake, those responsible for drafting up the bill knew what they were doing, just as Nancy Pelosi did when she pushed to have it passed without even reading its contents. It's unconstitutional, un-American and definitely anti-Christian.

Stan,

I'm almost done. Again my apologies by not doing the Reductio Ad Absurdum yet. I was dealing with an awful infection and will travel to my home town today. I hope I will arrive to my destination tomorrow. On Sunday will have more time to expose an adequate answer.

I wish you and your loved ones a happy new year.

Kind Regards.
