Before 9/11, most Americans had no opinion one way or the other about Muslims or Muslim nations. Most Americans work, and work hard. They work the longest hours of any of the first world peoples. In the USA, it is most common for both the husband and wife to work in order to merely pay the bills. It is also common for at least one or both to work some serious overtime. I say this to indicate not that we are abused, but that we are weary. We are too weary to be well informed.
We are also becoming aware that we have been cheated by our educators in our government schools. Our education has been turned into training in order to feed the industries needs for workers. This has short changed our knowledge base, certainly of histories that affect Muslims more than they affect us.
And our news media cheat us out of valid knowledge on a daily basis. For many reasons Americans are ignorant of the rest of the world.
When 9/11 happened, most Americans were confused, not just by the crime itself, but by the cheering of Muslims around the world at the deaths of innocent people. The most common American comment was “Why do they hate us??” And of course, this was followed by the fear of not knowing what to expect from a culture about which we, the maleducated American public, know almost nothing.
Americans were vaguely aware that they were not in control of the political class. In the USA, the political class has come to represent only the money flow. The words the political class speaks are meaningless; the votes by the public are meaningless. It is not possible to become one of the political class without tons of money to support you – in other words you must become exactly as they are. So the ideal of a nation governed by the representatives of the people has been subverted and lost: our nation is now governed by money, power, corruption and lies.
They are corrupt and we, the non-political class are currently at a loss as to how to correct that. But you need to know this: you cannot believe a single word that issues from the lips of any of our political class: we Americans know that. You need to know that, too.
You in the Muslim world also need to know that Americans did not hate Muslims before 9/11; Americans were too busy to even think about Muslims. And you need to know that Americans do not now hate Muslims; Americans fear Muslims: All Muslims, regardless of subcategory or species of belief. But Muslims are not exactly trying to change any of that. That adds to the fear. The Muslim declared need to eradicate Israel is now well known to U.S. citizens. This is easily projected to a perceived threat of a prolonged war of annihilation against us as well.
America was built on and prides itself in its religious tolerance, including the religion of Islam. But Americans generally reject intolerance of individual religions; Islam is now thought of as being intolerant, aggressive and amenable to violence. Muslims in the USA appear not to want to acculturate to religious tolerance and other American ways of life; they seem to want to take over instead.
An America that is under attack can be an awesome thing to behold. We Americans now feel under attack both from abroad, and certainly from within, including by our own political class. As you might imagine, this could well be an unstable situation, and many outcomes are now possible, most of them unpleasant to consider. Few Americans want this; most just want to be left alone to raise their families.
The history of the U.S. has now taken a swing into uncharted territory. What this means is that anything is now possible as the populace arouses itself to attempt to shake off the corruption that has come to dominate it. It is possible that not enough resources are available to the freedom lovers now, and that the failure to purge the USA of corruption and domineering politicians will fail. If that happens, the entire world will come to suffer for it, because our current crop of politicos has world-wide designs.
Allow me to repeat, there is no underlying hatred for Muslims that is either culturally or genetically instilled in Americans. But we do hate corruption and the worldview of lies and power mongering that infest our political class. And most Americans also hate the degradation of morality that has accompanied the rise of corruption to power.
And let me ask you this: what would the world look like if the European and North American countries suddenly ceased to exist? The massive wealth flow from those nations to OPEC nations would cease. The infusion of foreign aid, including military would cease. Wealth creation would be subsumed by wealth consumption and wealth stockpiling. But nuclear proliferation would become unstoppable. Peace would become remote.
Most Americans don’t hate Muslims, and never did. But now we certainly do fear them. I cannot say at what point fear turns into hatred. In general, so far it has not. But the hazard is great.
Just so you know.

You have done well to put into words what I believe most Americans feel in their gut. Thank you!
Steve
Thanks,
Stan
Most people in East Asia work longer hours than Americans.
Well, I did say first world. The point was not to claim anything other than that Americans are weary. I imagine East Asians are, also.
U.S. farmers, of which I am one, work very long hours during the productive part of their lives, because they must compete with wges and prices driven from outside the continent, and the infamous "price supports" are trivial compared to costs. This means that farmers and their wives both farm and hold jobs in town.
