They don't care about being "liked". They care about (a) dictating the terms of everyone's existence, and (b)HATING to DESTRUCTION anyone who balks at their arrogance in (a). When you are massively narcissistic, you like yourself far more than anyone else could possibly like you. So you don't care what the rest of humanity thinks because they are fools compared to you. Which is why there is no cure for narcissism: there is absolutely nothing wrong with the narcissist, according to the narcissist.
